After a tumultuous four years of ultimate disc, run-ins with the police, and wild parties at a small college in Connecticut; Jake found his psy-trance calling at Changmian’s "Samsara" in the spring of 2001. First attending as "something to do" on a Wednesday night in Boston, Jake re-united with college friend and teammate, Dave Henshaw, and immediately became engrossed in the culture. After the final "Samsara" in the summer of 2001, it was Jake who rode off from Tommy’s Pizza on an electric scooter and wearing a Styrofoam helmet saying, "Don’t worry guys, things here in Boston are just starting. This was just the beginning." And, to say the least, it was Jake’s insight which started the wheels of Anitya in motion. That summer, as he developed into an outstanding DJ, Jake patrolled the grounds during Changmian’s beach parties, honed his artistic and visual skills under the tutelage of Jay Shores and Alpha Wuscalus, and single-handedly organized parties and events at people’s houses – some without the house-owner’s knowledge! By the winter of 2001, Jake had become a vital member of the Changmian Productions crew and was keeping to his word that the end of "Samsara" was "just the beginning." Anitya opened its doors in January of 2002 and Jake’s prescience was rewarded with over 100 consecutive weekly Boston trance parties. But his foresight was just the surface of the cavernous depth that Jake has since proven to possess. Famous for his ability to sleep through anything – even a trance party that he spent all day and evening setting up for - Jake also has the ability to be the hardest working, most dedicated, and most determined member of the crew. When everyone else says, "it’s impossible;" Jake says, "it’s easy." When everyone else says, "we need to stop;" Jake says, "we’re just getting started." His vision is unmatched and his forward-thinking demeanor give him "and edge" on those who surround him. In fact, it is exactly that mentality which attracted recruiters from The Peace Corps to contact Jake about applying to their programs. A few essays and a couple of dazzling interviews, and Jake now finds himself operating a brand new juice manufacturing facility in the foothill’s of Peru’s Andes Mountains. Though his loss is difficult for Changmian/SonicBeating to swallow – his success in Peru has proven that Jake is the poster- boy for the old adage, "you can do anything you put your mind to." The fondest memory I have of Jake (and there have been many; from watching him carry two subs (one in each hand) up three flights of stairs to watching him casually handle a situation during a police raid…while traveling with amanita friends!) came at an outdoor event in New Hampshire a few summers ago. Jake, Dean Manning, and myself had driven to northern New Hampshire to help set up and then play at an outdoor/overnight party. Arriving at 3:00PM, the three of us worked all afternoon and evening – setting up the sound system, digging the toilets, procuring trash cans, cutting up firewood and creating an atmosphere which was conducive to a trance party in the woods. By the time the rest of the guests arrived, the three of us were beat. We sat down by the fire… and then the rains came. And did they ever!! While people flocked to shelter – making the most of the tents the three of us had erected and/or the personal tents they had brought – Jake stood by the fire with a hand-carved staff and simply said "it is NOT raining" over and over again. Dean and I wanted to run for shelter, but stayed with Jake and listened to him repeat his mantra. Soon, he had us both convinced – and soon, to the surprise of the DJ who was playing under shelter, there were three soaking wet people dancing to his music by the fire. Seeing us, others soon got on the dancefloor; and by the time the dancefloor was full – the rain had stopped. A few towels, a few discarded pairs of shoes and the party went until sunrise without missing a beat. And, if I remember, it was Jake who played the best DJ set of the entire night. Some could call it stubbornness, but I call it Jake’s most endearing quality – a never-say-die, never-admit-defeat, and never-lose-focus-on-what’s-important mentality. - written by Dave Henshaw |
