Directions to Gerry's Landing American Legion

(located in Cambridge, MA, directly next to the Elliot Bridge and the Charles River. Right on the bike path!)

Note about directions: Gerry's Landing can be challenging to find because it doesn't have a street address (being right on water has its advantages and disadvantages!). Be prepared that if you miss a turn, it may take some time to turn around and reorient yourself. We recommend you print out the map and directions and bring them with you. It'll be worth the trip!

Your goal:

The American Legion is a low-lying red brick bulding with a flag pole in front. It is immediately next to the bike path and therefore almost impossible to miss on foot.

Below you'll find:

By T:

Take the T to the Harvard Square stop (on the red line).

It's about a 20-30 minute walk (or a short bike ride) from there -- follow the directions "From Harvard Square."

From Harvard Square (on bike or foot):

Walk down John F. Kennedy Street toward the Charles River.

At the intersection of JFK Street and Memorial Drive (the Harvard Boat house is on the left corner), cross Memorial Drive, and turn right onto the bike path. Do not take the bridge across the river.

Walk or bike along the bike path -- it runs along the river (the river will be on your left, and Memorial Drive will be on your right).

Eventually the path will pass the Cambridge Boat House on the left.

Just past the Cambridge Boat House, the path will pass a small reddish building marked "BBN."

Follow the path as it curves leff after the BBN building.

The path will then go through a tunnel under a bridge (the Elliot Bridge).

Just after the tunnel, you will see the American Legion on your right.

From Harvard Square (by car):

Head towards the Charles River on John F. Kennedy Street.

At the intersection of JFK Street and Memorial Drive (the Harvard Boat house is on the left corner), turn right onto Memorial Drive. Do not take the bridge across the river.

When you come to an intersection with a light, the road will split- get in the left hand fork. The ideal lane to be in is the right lane of the left hand fork.

Go through the light.

One block later, you will come to another set of lights, where you should stay to the right (do not curve to the left).

Immediately after you pass through this light, get in the far left lane. You will make a U turn to the left from this lane at the first opportunity (this comes up very quickly), just after the sign for Greenough Blvd. (If you miss the U turn, you will come to another light in another mile or two where you can make a U turn).

The American Legion driveway is almost directly across the highway from where you made the U turn. There are two large concrete blocks, about 2 feet high, at the entrance to the American Legion parking lot.

As parking spaces are limited, please park in a way that will maximize space for others!

From Downtown Boston:

Take Storrow Drive west (toward Newton).

After passing the exit for Harvard Square/Cambridge, get in the right lane. Take the exit marked Arlington/Route 2.

Go over the Elliot Bridge -- stay in the far left lane.

Go through one traffic light (you're now on Greenough Blvd.)

Immediately after you pass through this light, get in the far left lane. You will make a U turn to the left from this lane at the first opportunity (this comes up fast), just after the sign for Greenough Blvd. (If you miss the U turn, you will come to a light in another mile or two where you can make the turn).

From West of Boston:

Take Soldiers Field Road east (towards Boston).

Take the exit for Arlington/Fresh Pond Parkway (the exit is on the left. Do not get in the lane so far to the left that you're forced to make a U turn!).

Go through the light at the exit.

Cross over the Elliot Bridge -- stay in the far left lane.

Take the exit marked Allston/Cambridge (it's on the left).

After going through the tollbooth, follow signs towards Cambridge.

Get on Storrow Drive West, and then follow the directions for "From Downtown Boston" above.

If you miss Storrow Drive West, you can head west on Memorial Drive:

Head west on Memorial Drive, past the Harvard Boathouse. After a long stretch of road, you'll see signs giving directions to Route 2 Arlington. This will come before a light -- do not head to Arlington, instead:

If you get lost and need to ask for directions, nearby landmarks are:

The Elliot Bridge: (The American Legion is on the Cambridge side of the river and the western side of the Bridge).

The Cambridge Boat Club: (The Cambridge Boat Club is also on the Cambridge side of the River (surprise, surprise), but to the eastern side of the bridge)

The Bike Path: (If you're walking along the bike path, it's hard to miss the American Legion -- it is directly next to it -- see directions for foot/bike above).

The Buckingham, Browne, and Nichols School: (The Buckingham, Browne, and Nichols School is directly across Greenough Blvd from the American Legion).

Mt. Auburn Hospital and Mt. Auburn Street:

Just about anyone in Cambridge can direct you to these locations, which are a 5-10 walk away from the American Legion.

If you park along Mt. Auburn Street, walk towards the river, cross Memorial Drive, and find the bike path. Take a right and follow it past the Cambridge Boat House on the left.

Just past the Cambridge Boat House, the path will pass a small reddish building marked "BBN." Follow the path as it curves leff after the BBN building.

The path will then go through a tunnel under a bridge (the Elliot Bridge).

Just after the tunnel, you will see the American Legion on your right.
